Text Box: me, it’s very satisfying when your regiment out-shoots or out-flanks the enemy, or you go at the charge screaming like a banshee and you see the fear on some poor Frenchman’s face.

The best events for me so far, include the multi-period events in the UK and the big battles abroad including Waterloo and Coudekerque; those Frenchies love a good scrap.

The Battles

This is the highlight for all re-enactors, the battle. More often than not, were first in the field (no change there). Moving fast and deploying in skirmish order to knock the French down at a respectable distance. This gives our red coated comrades time to deploy in line, with Flags blowing in the wind and musicians playing. As the French advance, our Regiment redeploys into line to fight as regular troops, until the enemy falls back from a hail of fire, allowing us to re-deploy as skirmishers.

My first big battle was full of artillery blasting away, pyrotechnics exploding close by, and then the French cavalry charging onto the field forcing us to rapidly deploy in a rough square for protection. I don’t mind admitting it was a bit scary, very confusing, and very exciting, but sticking close to your comrades pulls you through. The battles normally conclude with a charge, which is always an adrenaline rush.

The other critical part of any battle is keeping your rifle working, by regularly checking your flint and cleaning out the pan and touch hole, which ensures you keep firing throughout the battle.
