Suze Britton: Camp Follower
Text Box: introduction to camp life as a camp-follower. Once again a very warm welcome from those I had met before and those I was meeting for the first time. Many regiments and groups attended this event and I was introduced to a large number of people and characters.

Once more, necessary skills and knowledge that are required to portray a camp-follower were imparted to me as the event unfolded. I was never left at a loose end, always able to find someone to answer questions. Tracy introduced me to the pleasures of chopping potatoes, I never knew it could be so much fun - well it’s the company around the table and the campfire.

This was also my first introduction to the social ‘after the public leaves’ camp fire sing-a-long. *Grin* You have to live it!

The third event was at Middleton Cheney for the Armed Forces and Emergency Services Show, where the 95th were the main attraction and entertainment. I played different roles over the weekend as a camp-follower, supporting the riflemen’s displays for the public, and as a lady, attending ‘tiffin’ with the major and all the other ladies. Never a dull moment, always something to do, to see, to attend to. It really is what you put into it.

Being the curious type, I asked if I could ‘have a go’ with a Baker Rifle. Always open to requests and ideas, this was arranged and all those in the regiment that wished to have a go, including quite a few ladies, were loaned Baker Rifles and given one-to-one instruction and supervision by the riflemen (including a demonstration on how to clean and look after your rifle), a most enjoyable experience.
