‘First in the field and the last out’ describes completely the place in battle of a Rifle company of the 95th. Historically the Rifles were selected from the cream of the army and trained to the highest standards of individual performance and team work. This principal is followed in our company today with each man schooled in the proficiencies of drill, weapon handling, field craft and tactical manoeuvres. Training is initially conducted during dedicated training events at the beginning of each season and is then ongoing. Your uniform is dark green with black facings, the first ever attempt at camouflage undertaken by the British Army. Accordingly your leatherwork is also black, requiring no pipe clay or whitening to clean it. It is the most practical set of equipment of the Napoleonic era and completely in keeping with the role of a skirmisher. The side arms are of course the Baker Rifle and Sword Bayonet, which will become the tools of your trade and your constant companions in battle. While firing blank charges at events, we strive to conduct live firing range days each year so that you may know the true feel and power of your weapon. Once trained you will join the company in battle. You will find yourself fighting in “skirmish order” or as a formed body of men in line, as Riflemen are trained in both forms of action. There will be the opportunity to take part in various events at all manner of venues such as English Heritage and National Trust sites, independent stately homes and museums. A variety of overseas events enhance our exploits, such as the annual Battle of Waterloo in Belgium, where you will live in the grounds of Hougoumont and fight over the fields where your forefathers did battle against Napoleon. Among the most rewarding activities that we do each year are those events in support of the modern day regiment The Rifles (The Royal Green Jackets as was). We are fortunate and proud to be engaged each year to perform at regimental shows, recruiting drives and museum open days at Winchester. You will soon find your feet in the Rifle Company, esprit-de-core is a key factor of its success as each of us supports one another in the constant pursuit of fun and adventure. Once the day’s work is done, the camp, with its boundless hospitality, is there to enjoy. You’ll soon be among the veterans in the company reminiscing around the campfire, sharing stories of battles past and still to come in far off lands. The camaraderie within the society soon turns your hobby into a way of life that you couldn’t imagine living without...
